Hey everyone, it’s Dani! Welcome to Day 14 of the Food Styling Challenge. Today, we’re focusing on how to select and style the perfect burger buns to make your burgers look mouthwatering and photo-ready. Let’s dive into the essential tips and tricks!
Tip 1: Buy Fresh Buns
When it comes to burger buns, freshness is key:
- Pick up buns the morning of your shoot or late the day before to avoid any wrinkling or flattening.
- Buns left in bags for too long tend to steam, collapse, and lose their shape, so fresh buns ensure a plump, appealing look. Buying buns just before the shoot helps maintain that soft, perfect shape essential for great food photos.
Tip 2: Pick Out The Inside of The Top Bun
To prevent the “hat” effect, remove some of the inside of the top bun:
- Hollowing out the top bun allows it to sit lower, creating a snug, natural fit over the burger patty.
- This technique gives your burger a more cohesive look, making it appear ready to bite into. Hollowing the top bun ensures that your burger doesn’t look overly stacked or out of balance.
Tip 3: Use Scotchgard to Keep Buns Fresh
For set styling where the buns need to last, Scotchgard can be a lifesaver:
- Lightly spray the inside of the top and bottom buns with Scotchgard to prevent them from absorbing moisture from condiments.
- This tip is especially useful if the burgers will sit out for a while, helping the buns stay fresh and preventing sogginess. Note: Only use this method on buns intended for display, not for eating.
Tip 4: Add Extra Sesame Seeds with Glue
For a picture-perfect bun, don’t hesitate to glue on extra sesame seeds:
- If a bun has sparse or uneven seed placement, use a tiny bit of super glue to add seeds where needed.
- This trick is ideal for hero shots where every detail matters, giving the bun a visually appealing look. Customizing the seed placement can make the bun look just right and enhance its overall presentation.
Tip 5: Choose Buns That Aren’t Stuck Together
Look for individually baked buns to avoid awkward shapes:
- Buns baked separately retain a round, uniform shape without edges or creases, making them ideal for photos.
- If you prefer seeded buns, check with a local bakery for fresh, individually baked options on the day of your shoot. Uniform buns create a clean, professional look, making it easier to style your burger without worrying about irregular shapes.
