🍪HOW TO STYLE COOKIES 🍪{Food Styling Tutorial}
Hey guys, Dani here! Today, we’re diving into cookie styling. Let’s jump in and get those cookies looking absolutely irresistible.
Step 1: Prep the Cookie Dough
For homemade cookies:
- Shape the dough carefully. Round out the dough balls so they spread evenly and predictably.
- Add extra ingredients on top. Press chocolate chips, nuts, or any key ingredients into the tops of the dough balls to make sure they’re visible after baking. This way, the finished cookies highlight those delicious inclusions.
If you’re using store-bought cookies, just work with what you’ve got and highlight the best-looking ones!
Step 2: Add a Glossy Finish
To make your cookies look freshly baked:
- Brush them lightly with oil (like olive oil) using a small paintbrush. This will give them a subtle sheen and bring out the richness of the dough.
- Avoid overdoing it! Too much oil can soak into the cookie, making it look greasy. A light dab is all you need.
Step 3: Stack for Visual Appeal
For an eye-catching stack:
- If you’re stacking cookies high, consider using a skewer to hold them in place. Skewer through the center of each cookie to keep the stack stable.
- Offset each cookie slightly instead of stacking them directly on top of each other. This creates a more interesting, layered look.
- Frozen cookies are ideal for stacking since they hold their shape better, but you can also use slightly soft cookies if you’re careful.
Step 4: Create a Broken Cookie Look
If your client or shoot calls for a crumbly, broken look:
- Take a cookie and break it carefully. You can also gently crumble the edges to create an organic feel.
- Arrange the crumbs and pieces in a natural way, so it doesn’t look too “styled.” This technique works especially well for overhead shots.
Step 5: Achieve the Perfect Chocolate Melt
For that irresistible melted chocolate look:
- Use a batch of frozen cookies or bake some in advance. When you’re ready to shoot, warm them in the oven for just a few minutes to get the chocolate soft and melty.
- For a dramatic chocolate “pull,” bake cookies with extra chocolate chips clustered in the center. After baking, crack the cookie where the chocolate chips are concentrated for that gooey effect.
Step 6: Add Props for a Cozier Vibe
Props can bring a cookie shot to life:
- Milk containers or cups with a paper straw are great additions that give a nostalgic touch.
- Smaller cups or containers work well since they stay in frame without overpowering the cookies.
Step 7: Mark and Arrange for the Perfect Chocolate Pull
For a planned chocolate pull:
- Mark your parchment paper where you want the chocolate “pull” to happen so you can create consistent, dramatic breaks.
- As the cookies bake, they’ll expand, so be sure to make your mark bigger than the dough ball itself.
